Everydaynomics™ Cooperative Entrepreneur

In this course, you will learn everything you need to know about starting  cooperative enterprises, such as credit unions and food stores. In Module 5 of Everydaynomics Boot Camp, you learned that a cooperative (also spelled co-operative) is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise. According to the Cooperative Development Center at Kent State University, the best way to differentiate cooperative enterprises from other forms of businesses is to ask: “Who owns it, who controls it, and who benefits from it?” In the cooperative, the answers are one and the same: “the cooperative is owned and controlled by the members who benefit from its services.”

Particular attention will be paid to multi-stakeholder cooperatives and the interests of workers, consumers, and community supporters. Multi-stakeholder cooperatives allow for governance by two or more stakeholder groups such as workers, consumers, producers or general community supporters. You will learn about balancing these various interests with respect to governance rights and the distribution of surplus (savings).
